 About Fanwood - History Minimize

Spen Valley District Scouts are truly fortunate in that they have their own campsite situated in 8.5 acres of woodland at Fanwood , Ferrand Lane, Gomersal. The site was formerly the a part of the old Gomersal Colliery, and, in the valley below the wardens house, a part of the old colliery tramway can still be found. In later years the land formed part of the Cleckheaton Golf Club. In 1936 the Golf club moved to it's present location at Chain Bar and the land at Gomersal was purchased by a group of local Businessmen, and donated to the local Scout Association.

1972 saw the completion of major building works at the site, with the completion of the Frank Harris Training Centre for Scouts and Guides and the Wardens house, which were the result of a major fund raising drive by the then Mayor of Cleckheaton, Cllr. Frank Harris. The Centre was officially opened at the annual Field Day held on 15th July 1972 by Lord Baden Powell, the grandson of our Founder. It is an ideal indoor centre for Pack Holidays, Training Weekends etc. comprises of a Main Activities Hall/Dining Area, a modem fully equipped Kitchen, and Male, Female, and Disabled toilets with showers.

During 1986/87 the Scout and Guide Development Fund was founded with the aim of raising some £10,000 to improve facilities at the campsite, and, their activities saw the erection of a new Blockhouse which forms modern toilet block with showers and wash-up area.

2003 saw the completion of our Bunkhouse extension to the centre which fully upgraded the facilities we offer to visitors sleeping 24 young people along with separate Leader Rooms and disabled accommodation.  The new facility also offers mixed gender toilets and a kitchenette.

In 2009 following a great deal of development in the range of activities the Centre offers it became known simply as the Fanwood Scout Activity Centre, although its facilities are available for use by other Community Groups by arrangement.

Today, works on the site are completed by the District Service Team, working under the direction the Management Committee.
